The Federació de Mutualitats de Catalunya represents and defends the interests of mutual societies and their members in Catalonia. It currently has a membership of 75 mutual organisations that provide insurance cover on a non-profit basis for nearly one million people, or 17% of the population of Catalonia.
The Mutual Societies Act, 10/2003, of the Parliament of Catalonia, granted the Federation general powers to represent and defend the interests of Catalan mutual societies providing social welfare insurance services. This Act was passed in virtue of the exclusive powers the Generalitat de Catalunya has in regard to mutual societies operating outside the Social Security system within the bounds of mercantile law.
